Elechi Resigns as Nairobi County Assembly Speaker.

Elechi, former Nairobi Speaker.

The Nairobi county speaker Beatrice Elachi resigns after along legal and administrative tussle that has put her in the cross roads with the Nairobi governor mike Mbuvi Sonko.

John Kamangu in acting position was appointed by Elachi pending further communications.  The speaker who has faced so much battle in the Nairobi county tendered her resignation letter in the morning of 11th august 2020.

She cited that she underwent a lot of conflicts and life-threatening incidents in the recent days and that only left her with no option but leave the office.

‘Pleasure is all mine to have served as the speaker of the Nairobi county assembly as from September 2017 when we finished the elections to date’ Elachi reads the letter to the president.

‘Tremendous changes have also taken place; challenges have also come with it. Owing to the coming of Nairobi metropolitan services, transformation of Nairobi to a better capital city is also on its way, for the last few days, we have seen and experienced a lot of conflicts and life-threatening incidents,’ she added.

‘It has been tough and I can’t hold any longer,” Elachi said, “I therefore tender my resignation and thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving me this opportunity to serve under his Jubilee administration.”

The Nairobi county office now has a new task of finding a new   permanent holder of the office. There has been along tussle between Elachi And Sonko in the capital city and the speaker has been accusing the Nairobi county boss of the push by Mcas to remove her from office. Elachi in the recent past gazetted a new county assembly clerk that was sworn in and that pivoted the war between the county boss and the speaker. This is because mr ngwele the former county clerk was allied to Sonko.

‘My troubles are linked to the battle I have with clerk Jacob Ngwele and my stand on Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) which the governor is embroiled in a war with.’ She said at an interview in the previous weeks.

Ms Elachi pointed out that the MCAs wanted to impeach her were those who allied to Sonko and who are opposed to NMS for having sealed all cash leakages at the county. She further accused Sonko and Mr Ngwele of teaming up to frustrate her as she stood her ground that the latter is not the assembly’s substantive clerk and also for calling out the governor in his attempts to frustrate operations of NMS. Has Sonko won with latest development now that Elachi has resigned?
