The first meeting of the newly elected members of parliament will be held on Tuesday, August 25, and they must be present.
This is in accordance with a Gazette Notice published on Thursday, which urged National Assembly members-elect to take advantage of their first sitting and pre-swearing-in rituals.
“Article 126(21 of the Constitution provides that whenever a new House is elected the President, by notice in the Gazette, shall appoint the place and date for the first sitting of the new House, which shall not be more than 30 days after the election,” read the statement by Acting Clerk Serah Kioko.
Soon after their orientation sessions, Ms. Kioko also informed the Members-elect about the events planned for their first day in Parliament.
“Ahead of the first Sitting of the House, the National Assembly has organized orientation sessions for all Members-Elect,” stated Ms Kioko.
“In this regard, the Clerk of the National Assembly invites all Members to attend orientation sessions to be held in Parliament Buildings, Nairobi as per the schedules; Thursdays 25 August (Morning session-9 am to 12:30 pm, Afternoon-2:30 pm to 5 pm) and Friday 26th August(9 am to 12:30 pm, Afternoon-2:30 pm to 5 pm).”
The Clerk then tells the members of the 13th parliament’s first session, where she will administer the oath of office before they choose the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
The clerk emphasized that the members’ orientation session will primarily focus on gathering their biographical information, giving them a tour of the facilities, and informing them on House-related issues.
The original National ID or Passport, KRA PIN, original Certificate of the Elected Member of the National Assembly issued by the IEBC Returning Officer, and other papers are required to be presented in relation to the same.
