The Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance urged musician Kevin Kioko, better known by his stage name Bahati, to withdraw from the Mathare Parliamentary contest.
Bahati has now promised not to back down after Azimio decided to support Anthony Oluoch of the ODM in the constituency polls as their standard bearer.
“Dear Azimio… stop misleading the voters of Mathare. Bahati – MP Mathare has not stepped down for anyone,” he wrote in a social media post.
Following that, the Mama singer called a press conference where he rejected requests for his resignation from ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Public Service CAS Rachel Shebesh.
“I have seen a lot of propaganda by Sifuna and Shebesh going viral. I heard it while in the ground, Bahati Kioko is still in the race as the next Member of Parliament Mathare constituency,” he said.
In order to resolve the impasse caused by different parties affiliated with Azimio running candidates in the same electoral constituencies, Raila Odinga, the coalition’s presidential candidate, stated last month that elections will be held in June.
He claims that the coalition decided to make the most well-liked candidate the standard bearer because he outperformed Anthony Oluoch.
“I was called for a meeting being chaired by Hon Gumo, Shebesh and many others. They made it clear that Bahati is leading both in the polls and on the ground. They made it clear that the incumbent is not doing well on ground and has resisted stepping down.”
According to Bahati, the Azimio team held follow-up calls and meetings and advised him to put his objectives on hold despite being in the lead in the polls.
Edwin Sifuna, the secretary general of the ODM, stated on Monday that Aluoch, the party’s favoured candidate, will take Bahati’s place and be considered for a different job.
Since the Jubilee Party is unaware of such preparations, Bahati asserts that this is propaganda.
Bahati is vying for the opportunity to have his name appear on the ballot for the second time.
When urged to abandon his quest for the Mathare MP seat in favor of the ODM candidate in April, the musician sobbed.
A few weeks later, Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni gave Bahati his nomination certificate and commended him for fighting valiantly.
