If there is a prize for confused county governance, then Nairobi City County takes it all! From deputy-less following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe to almost ‘governor-less” following the transfer of ‘essential’ dockets to the central government and now to a tumble in the assembly.
And now, the resignation of Beatrice Elachi has seen her Deputy Speaker John Kamungu, who also doubles as the Ruai MCA as the NEW Nairobi County Speaker. Despite her frosty relationship with Governor Mike Sonko, Elachi resigned with her head high and in “good faith” as she advises the governor to seek God and stop intimidations.
Confidential information shared to Hello News Desk confirms that Speaker Beatrice Elachi resigned today, August 8, 2020, morning citing threats and intimidations from the City Boss. However, she hid her sorrow but instead chose neutrality. She said, “This is the right time…Last time I left with my head down this time, I leave with my head high, without force.” Her in-depth speech continued by stating … “I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenya. For the last few days, there have been life threatening incidences. I appoint my deputy speaker, John Kamangu, as the acting speaker.”
Elachi’s decision posed a bright morning for Ruai MCA John Kamangu, who is among the most “fortunate” deputies in the devolution era. The devolution governance system has been marked with new occurrences, luck, and individual-based growth. Governor James Nyoro is among devolution deputies to reap big following the fall of his controversial boss to EACC. Today, it was John Kamangu’s time to flex into the top seat.
The recognition of Beatrice Elachi came by a surprise because the country has ignited the gear of embracing women’s leadership. Besides, Elachi has been enjoying immense support from the “system.” It will not be surprising if the city-based political analyst terms her move as “strategic” for, who knows?
Elachi was keen to space her shoulder from the system, thanking President Uhuru Kenyatta to serve the residents of County Number 17, which is currently under two managerial systems.
When asked about her opinion regarding the city’s progress, Elachi was quick to urge the Nairobi County Assembly to Stay firm and support the transformation process under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director-General Mohammed Badi. At least, this guess came true. Hello News has known Ellachi as a strong woman-leader and wishes her all the best in her future political careers.
